Harley Wood School of Astronomy
The Harley Wood School of Astronomy (HWSA) will be held from Thursday 4th - Sunday 7th July at the Moreton Bay Research Center at North Stradbroke Island.
Overview
Are you an astronomy postgraduate student spending WAY too much time optimising and debugging code? Want to improve your astronomical code’s efficiency by 10% but don’t have the tools or know-how? WELL, do we have a workshop for you!
This year’s Harley Wood School of Astronomy, held on the beautiful North Stradbroke Island, encompasses a D.I.Y approach to coding effective and efficient astronomical computer programs. By the end of it, you’ll be flogging your local High Performance Computer, creating and destroying the universe, in no time at all.
Throughout the workshop we’ve organised sessions aiding early career researchers and students in writing smarter, and more easily readable code in Python. Not only that, the workshop aims to increase your understanding in multi-processing and code parallelisation, increasing your codes efficiency and using your resources effectively.
Finishing up your PhD can be an overwhelming experience, especially trying to organise a life after it. Our panel sessions with industry, academic and outreach personalities who have already endure through that hardship will share their stories about life after a PhD. After our panel discussion about communicating science, both towards a public and scientific audience, you’ll be crafting up award-winning presentations and posters in no time at all!

Activities
Just incase you haven’t enough fun and games whilst coding up your amazing programs, we have a wide variety of team-building activities planned throughout the workshop including a Trivia/board game night and a scavenger hunt around the venue. For you adventuring types, we have organised sand boarding, riding epic sand swirls in the island.
If you’re looking to zen, then that’s chill too. With beautiful beaches, and an awesome gelato place, you can relax with some spectacular views of the ocean whilst getting a nice sugar rush to keep you going.
We’ll also be running a telescope marathon, so pack your best joggers because you’ll be going on a journey through time and space!
