Getting around Brisbane

Public transport in Brisbane mainly operates using cash or goCards. These cards offer discounted travel rates compared to paper tickets and can be purchased at Queensland rail stations (including the airport station) or at 7-Eleven and NightOwl convenience stores throughout the city. A $AUD10 refundable deposit is required for the card itself, and then you simply top it up with however much you need.

The nicest way to get to UQ from the CBD, South Bank, West End, or Milton, is by CityCat on the river. To pay for your ferry ticket you can use your goCard or buy a paper ticket. Paper tickets need cash and payment is taken on the ferry. No debit/credit cards accepted.

Brisbane also has an extensive public transport network of buses and trains. The Loop is a free bus service that runs through Brisbane's Central Business District. It has numerous major stops including Central Station, Queen Street Mall, Botanic Gardens, Riverside Centre, QUT and King George Square. For all other paying bus services you will again need a goCard or cash, with the former strongly preferable. Children under five years travel free and those aged five to fifteen years travel for half price. You can pick up bus timetables from Council Customer Service Centres, Queen Street Bus Station Information Centre, Garden City Bus Interchange, newsagents, and libraries.

TransLink coordinates the bus, train and ferry services throughout south-east Queensland. For more information about fares, timetables, tickets and services please visit the Queensland transport website.

Finally, as with most universities, parking at St Lucia campus is extremely limited. It will fill up by 7:30am in the mornings even outside of semesters. We do not recommend you drive; public transport is the way to go!

Flight Information

Brisbane Airport is the primary international airport serving Brisbane and South East Queensland. It is the third busiest Australian airport. The airport services 26 airlines flying to 42 domestic and 28 international destinations. The airport has numerous facilities including ATMs and currency exchange, baggage wrapping, toilets and showers, parents rooms, mobile charging stations, etc.

You can travel to Brisbane City and the University of Queensland via the following methods:

  • Taxi - approximately $AUD55 to $AUD75 one way.
  • Con-x-ion Airport - Transfers meet every flight arriving into Brisbane Airport seven days a week, offering one way or return "door to door" coach services from the Airport to/from Brisbane city, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. Passengers can book transfers at the Con-x-ion customer service counter in the International Terminal, kerbside booth at the Domestic Terminal or online.
  • Car Rental - All major car rental companies have desks at Brisbane Airport including Avis, Budget, Hertz, Thrifty and Europcar. However, as stated above, driving and parking around St. Lucia campus is extremely difficult and we strongly recommend you use one of the many public transport options instead!
  • Uber - Costs approximately $AUD35 - $AUD50
  • Train - Airtrain offers convenient services between the Airport, Brisbane City and the Gold Coast, as well as transfers between the Domestic and International Terminals. Airtrain operates every day between 5.45am and 10pm, departing every 15 minutes during peak hours. A single trip from the Airport to the City costs around $AUD18. For the full Airtrain schedule and fare details please see www.airtrain.com.au.
